continues to hit Japan in a big way. The 3DTV from Sony has now made it to Japan beating both Panasonic and Samsung. The edge-lit LED LX900 comes with the IR emitter built-in and two pairs of RealD active shutter glasses. The glasses are also available separately for $133.

The first no-glasses-required set we actually managed to spot on the show floor is made by a Chinese company called TCL. A loop of animated 3D cartoons played over a honeycomb of 3D sets. The 42-inch TD-42F is already on the market in China, says TCL 3DTV Project Marketing Manager King (no last name). It sells for about $20,000. It works like this: there are actually eight lenses on the screen itself. Depending on where you stand in relation to the TV, you see only a few of those perspectives. Experiencing 3D on a television minus those horrifically unsightly glasses has been a dream for years, and while we heard that Mitsubishi had a few tricks up its sleeve last year, we're finally seeing the fruits of its labor. In a brief, completely monotonous video, the outfit demonstrates its "scalable system for real-time acquisition, transmission and autostereoscopic display of dynamic scenes," which translates to "3D TV" in layman's terms. We'll restrain from getting all up in the technicalities, but feel free to take a look at what the "future holds" in the video after the break.

Designates Wide World of Sports Complex as Hub for 3D Development

ESPN, citing the need for "a real-world testing ground" for the ongoing development of its forthcoming 3DTV service, said it has designated the ESPN Innovation Lab at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando as the hub for developing 3D technology.

Panasonic Prepares 3DTV Roll-out in Japan

3DVieraOSAKA, JAPAN: Panasonic this week set the date for the market debut of its first 3DTV plasmas. The company said it’s 50- and 54-inch Viera VT2 series 3D sets will become available in Japan April 23. The two TVs will retail for around 430,000 yen (US$4,800) and 530,000 yen (US$5,900) respectively. 3D-capable, Blu-ray recorders and a player will also be rolled out.
